8th Grade Chair Placements and Challenges
During the first two weeks of school, we will be holding a pre-assessment. Students will sightread music in order to demonstrate their ability to recall scales and other exercises. Chair placements determine where a student will sit in their sections. Knowing where they are in their sections helps with part distribution. Parts are distributed with several factors in mind, ability and difficulty of part. From time to time, the students in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd chairs will find themselves placed as head performers in the second and third parts to help their peers and strengthen the overall musicality of the upcoming performance. There will always be a first and last chair, and if a student does not do well on their placement, there are plenty of opportunities to improve where a student sits. Students are strongly encouraged to go for the higher seat and challenge the next student up. Challenges are only upon the approval of the director.
