About learwood MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE LEARWOOD Band PROGRAM
Learwood Middle School is part of the Avon Lake City School District, located 15 miles west of Cleveland in Avon Lake, Ohio. The Instrumental Music Department serves more than 170 students, offering a variety of performing ensembles including 7th Grade Concert Band, 8th Grade Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble.
The Avon Lake community and its schools take great pride in their music programs. The community was most recently recognized by NAMM as a "2016 Most Outstanding Communities in the USA for Music Education". The school district is recognized as Excellent with Distinction by the Ohio Department of Education and Avon Lake High School is nationally ranked by US News and World Report.
The Avon Lake City Schools also offer 5th and 6th grade bands at Troy Intermediate School and in grades 9th through 12 at Avon Lake High School. There are 10 band encompassing more than 500 students playing instruments in the Avon Lake City Schools. Avon Lake also has a 5th through 12th grade string orchestra program.
Students at Learwood Middle School have the opportunity to participate in band daily during school. Each day's rehearsals focus on the concepts, skills, and techniques that are essential to each student's progress and participation in instrumental music. A variety of literature is used during the school year.
OUR ENSEMBLES 8TH GRADE CONCERT BAND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN BAND HAD A DAILY FULL BAND REHEARSAL, GIVING STUDENTS THE EXPERIENCE AND PREPARATION NECESSARY FOR HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC. THE 8TH GRADE CONCERT BAND IS PRIVILEGED TO PERFORM WITH THE AVON LAKE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING SHOREMEN, THE ANNUAL LEARWOOD VETERANS' DAY CEREMONY, AND AROUND THE AVON LAKE COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL DISTRICT. THIS FINE ENSEMBLE CONSISTENTLY RECEIVES SUPERIOR AND EXCELLENT RATINGS FROM THE OHIO MUSIC EDUCATION ASSOCIATION MIDDLE SCHOOL LARGE GROUP ADJUDICATED EVENTS.
7TH GRADE CONCERT BAND 7TH GRADE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN BAND ARE SEPARATED INTO ONE OF TWO PERIOD CLASSES BASED ON WHETHER THEY PLAY A WOODWIND INSTRUMENT OR BRASS/PERCUSSION, ALLOWING FOR A HIGHER LEVEL OF ATTENTION AND GUIDANCE TO INDIVIDUAL STUDENT LEARNING AND GROWTH. PERIODICALLY, THE TWO CLASSES ARE COMBINED TO REHEARSE AS A FULL ENSEMBLE. THE 7TH GRADE CONCERT BAND CONSISTENTLY RECEIVES SUPERIOR AND EXCELLENT RATINGS FROM THE OHIO MUSIC EDUCATION ASSOCIATION MIDDLE SCHOOL LARGE GROUP ADJUDICATED EVENTS.
7TH GRADE INTRO TO BAND STUDENTS NEW TO BAND OR IN NEED OF REMEDIAL LEARNING IN 7TH GRADE ARE PLACED IN A SEMESTER COURSE FOR SMALL GROUP LEARNING. THIS CLASS GIVES STUDENTS MORE INDIVIDUALIZED ATTENTION TO HELP THEM CATCH UP TO THEIR PEERS IN THE SECOND SEMESTER.
LEARWOOD JAZZ ENSEMBLE JAZZ ENSEMBLE IS AN EXTRACURRICULAR ENSEMBLE THAT MEETS AFTER SCHOOL ONCE A WEEK. STUDENTS MUST BE ENROLLED IN EITHER 7TH GRADE OR 8TH GRADE CONCERT BAND DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GUITAR AND BASS. ALL BAND STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE REGARDLESS OF THEIR CONCERT BAND INSTRUMENT. REHEARSALS FOCUS ON CONCEPTS AND SKILLS NEEDED TO PERFORM IN POP MUSIC STYLES. A VARIETY OF STYLES ARE STUDIED AND PERFORMED DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, INCLUDING TRADITIONAL JAZZ, SWING, BLUES, ROCK, LATIN, AND OTHER POP MUSIC STYLES.
